The Watchers are beasts from another dimension, another universe, that looks into our own. We don't know why they are watching, and we're not even sure what they're watching but we know they're there. And they're waiting... for something.
2017, ink on toned paper
In 2017 I participated in the 100 Days Project and drew 100 drawings in 100 days. This is a selection of some of those drawings. At the end of 2017 I ran a Kickstarter to fund the printing of a book of the drawings. The book was funded in two hours and the campaign ended at 600% of the goal. I was able to print a few extra books which I sell on Etsy or at local events. You can also buy one at Local Discoveries on NE Alberta in Portland.
This project was born from the Inktober initiative which encourages artists to improve their inking skills. Acting on a suggestion from my brother, I started drawing animals at work every day for the month of October. To increase the challenge, the work was all old-fashioned and the animals were alphabetical and started with the same letter as their occupation. The project developed beautifully and in December 2016 I released a limited edition book of the drawings which is now mostly sold out.
The Incongruities were a series of gently absurd creature paintings, initially created one per day during the course of a month. Once the month was complete I found myself returning to the theme again and again and series grew. This is a sample of the illustrations.
This is a series imagining dragons hanging out in Portland. These works have been exhibited at Just for Geeks and Giggles 2014, at Fleeting States Gallery in Portland, OR; featured on io9; and were sold for a time at Powells Books in Portland. The Dragon of Union Station has been awarded both Director's Choice and Judges' Choice ribbons at WesterCon 69 Art Show in 2016.
I've recently been exploring the medium of pen and ink. It's a medium that seems well suited to graphic art that would be good printed on t-shirts or made into stickers.
While most of my whimsical work falls into the Incongruities series, I have a few paintings that are of a similar feel but not quite in the series. This work is a mix of digital painting, watercolor, and oil.
These are some of the latest things happening in my studio.
